ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE, BOMBAY

The 3rd of December, l994 marks the 125th Anniversary of St. Xavier's College, Bombay one the oldest colleges in the country, which has established a name for itself, not only as a premier institution of higher learning and academic excellence but also for innovation and creativity in the field of curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Founded in 1869, the pioneering efforts of the college led to the diversification and growth of education in the University of Bombay. A number of new departments were initiated by the college in microbiology, sociology, geology, psychology and the life sciences. The college has been the nursery of several    post-graduate colleges, which are now independent, full-fledged institutions such as, the St. Xavier's Institute of Education, St. Xavier's Technical Institute, and the Xavier's Institute of Management etc.

Over, the years, the college has consistently striven to maintain high standards of education. Realizing the importance of the teaching-learning process the college emphasizes regular seminars, workshops, field trips, student feedback and updated library services and facilities. In the ambience of the college, which is a veritable microcosm of India, the students interact in a spirit of mutual respect, friendship and cooperation. Today, many of the alumni have distinguished themselves in fields as diverse as education, law, religion, science, journalism, sports, the arts, industry, public administration and medicine, vindicating the inspiring motto of the college: “Provocans ad Volandum”, (Rousing to fly).

The Department of Posts is happy to issue a commemorative stamp on the 125th anniversary of the founding of St. Xavier's College, which has carved for itself a niche in the history of University Education in India.
